Statement on hate killing of Muslim family in London, Ontario

  • 1 min read

Our hearts are heavy as we continue to process the horrifying hate crime that took place June 6th, 2021, in London Ontario resulting in the deaths of four members of a Muslim Canadian family.

We recognize these acts of racist violence and hatred reflect an ongoing risk and reality for the Muslim community. Somerset West remains committed to anti-racism and anti-oppression work and will continue to make this a priority in everything we do. There is no place for hatred and discrimination based on creed or race. As we grieve, we must continue to stand in solidarity against anti-Muslim hate and acts of terrorism .

The United Muslim Organizations of Ottawa-Gatineau have suggested the following ways we can all show our support to the family and community by:

  • Raising awareness – Post on social media by using the hashtag #OurLondonFamily. The family has asked that their images and names not be circulated publicly while they are grieving and need space. Please support the family by respecting their wishes.

  • Supporting Family Members – You can donate to the official LaunchGood which is supported by the family members, the London Muslim Mosque, and Islamic Relief Canada.

The statement from South West Community Health Centre expresses profound sorrow over the tragic hate crime that took place on June 6, 2021, in London, Ontario, where four members of the Afzaal family were killed in an Islamophobic attack. The community came together to honor the victims through a Muslim funeral service, reflecting both grief and resilience. This act of remembrance underscores the importance of standing against hate and fostering unity.
