With initial outreach programs dating back to 1969, Somerset West Community Health Centre (SWCHC) has been serving its surrounding community for over 40 years. Since its earliest days as a small healthcare clinic operating out of “borrowed” facilities above a tavern, SWCHC has been dedicated to the health and well being of our community.
Today, the Centre’s mission has expanded its focus from primary care to include comprehensive cutting-edge community-based programs, programs that address people’s overall well-being – social, mental and physical – in the context of building healthy families and communities.
SWCHC has an excellent reputation for innovation and creativity regarding community programs and is a leader in terms of the range and depth of services available. SWCHC is highly successful in reaching populations of folks considered hardest to serve.
"SWCHC is a well-established organization, but is not just content with past successes. Those involved at all levels of the organization share a passion for their work and respect for each other. They continually reflect on past practice and work to improve what they do in the interests of SWCHC clients and community."

The establishment of a supervised injection site in Ottawa is an important issue that deserves an open community discussion. Somerset West Community Health Centre, along with our community partners, will fully participate in this community dialogue. We endorse a harm reduction approach to drug use in Ottawa as part of an integrated drug strategy that also includes prevention, treatment, and enforcement.
